Military registration of women in Ukraine mandatory only for medical professionals

Ukraine

On 7 October 2022, the Parliament of Ukraine adopted changes to the Law of Ukraine “On Military Duty and Military Service” in relation to military registration of women. The changes provide for mandatory military registration of women, who have professions related to medical or pharmaceutical activities only. Women of all other professions can be included into the military registry voluntarily.

Women included into the military registry – either on a mandatory or voluntary basis -- can be drafted into military service or engaged to perform work to ensure the defence of the state in wartime.

Prior to these changes, women in a wide list of professions were subject to military registration, which created excessive social tension and debate in society.

The changes to the Law came into force on 26 October 2022.

Legislation: the Law of Ukraine “On Introduction of Changes to Article 1 of the Law of Ukraine “On Military Duty and Military Service” regarding Military Registration of Women” № 2664-IX dated 7 October 2022.
