Photovoltaics have been green lit again

April 2021 brought welcome changes to the area of photovoltaic and wind energy in Slovakia. The so-called “stop status”, which had been in place since 2013, was lifted. The stop status prevented the capacity of existing sources from being increased and new power generation sources from being connected to the grid.

The available installed capacity earmarked for photovoltaic and wind power plants totals 407 MW for the entire Slovak Republic. It is divided equally among the individual operators of the regional distribution systems – the West Slovak, Central Slovak and East Slovak distribution companies. Currently, 50 MW of installed capacity is allocated to each of the regions. This limit will be increased, if necessary, up to a total combined capacity of 407 MW. Possible restrictions will be announced three years in advance.

The Guidelines are the result of cooperation between the Slovakian Economic Ministry, the Slovak Electricity Transmission System, and the distribution companies. Information on allocated, exhausted, and available installed capacities is also published on the website.
