Understanding the economic fallout on different sectors is a mammoth task for government. Whilst the impact on the leisure and retail sectors is apparent, the effect on owners of commercial real estate is less patent despite substantial efforts by the industry, the BPF and others to make sure the impact on commercial landlords is heard.
The government is in listening mode and has launched a survey calling on commercial landlords to provide hard facts about rent and service charge collection, obtain a better understanding of why tenants did not pay and asking if landlords have seen the recently issued Code of Practice for the Commercial Property sector.
Whilst the short deadline for replies is 30 July 2020 this is an opportunity commercial landlords should, quickly, grab. Providing hard information to government will ensure commercial landlords’ voices are heard and may influence its approach to any further extension of the temporary moratoria.
