Turkey: VERBIS registration postponed again

Turkiye

On 23 June 2020, the Turkish Data Protection Board (“DPB”) announced for the third time the postponement of registration with the Data Controllers Registry Information System (“VERBIS”), Turkey's public registry for data controllers.

Accordingly, the new due dates for registration with VERBIS are as follows:

  • 30 September 2020 for data controllers with more than fifty (50) employees or with an annual balance sheet total exceeding TRY 25mn (twenty-five million Turkish lira); and for data controllers located in foreign jurisdictions; and
  • 31 March 2020 for data controllers with less than fifty (50) employees and an annual balance sheet total of less than TRY 25mn (twenty-five million Turkish lira) whose main field of operation is the processing of sensitive data, and for the data controllers who are governmental institutions and organizations.

In its official announcement, the DPB emphasized the requests of various industry representatives, including the Union of Chambers and Exchanges of Turkey, and that the technical difficulties arising because of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, were decisive factors for the postponement

Data controllers, despite the postponement of these deadlines, should carefully fulfil their registration obligations as soon as possible in order to avoid severe financial sanctions, as in principle no further postponement is expected.
