The Future Homes Standard: Revised Closing Date for Building Regulations Consultation

We previously reported on the Government’s consultation on changes to the building regulations applicable to new dwellings. The consultation seeks views on the Government’s plans to increase the energy efficiency requirements for new homes. The Future Homes Standard, which is proposed to be introduced by 2025, will require new build homes to be future-proofed with low carbon heating and world-leading levels of energy efficiency. While necessary for achieving UK’s decarbonisation of heating goals, there are already questions emerging around matters such as accuracy in the calculation process and enforcement.

This consultation comes at a time when heating is also receiving Scottish Government attention. As we reported here, the Scottish Government is introducing a Heat Networks Bill this year to ‘introduce regulation of the heat network sector to support, facilitate and create controls in respect of the development of district and communal heating infrastructure in Scotland’. How far reaching the measures will be in this Bill remain to be seen.

The consultation was previously due to close on 7th January 2020, but the deadline has been extended to 7th February 2020. You can respond to the consultation here.
