Turkey: Due date of VERBIS registration postponed

On 5 September 2019, the Turkish Data Protection Board (“DPB”) announced the postponement of the due date for registration at the Data Controllers Registry Information System (“VERBIS”). Please see our E-Alert where further information can be found regarding registration with VERBIS.

As stated in the announcement, the DPB has extended the deadline to register at the VERBIS for three (3) more months (to 31 December 2019) only for

  1. data controllers who have more than fifty (50) employees or an annual balance sheet total of more than TRY 25,000,000.00 (twenty-five million Turkish Liras); and/or
  2. data controllers who are resident in foreign jurisdictions.

However, for

  1. data controllers with less than fifty (50) employees and an annual balance sheet total of less than TRY 25,000,000.00 (twenty-five million Turkish Liras) whose main field of operation is processing of sensitive data; and/or
  2. those that are governmental institutions and organizations, the due dates remain as previously announced.

Accordingly, the current due dates for registration with the VERBIS are as follows:

(i) Data controllers who have more than fifty (50) employees or an annual balance sheet total of more than TRY 25,000,000.00 (twenty-five million Turkish Liras). 1 October 2018 31 December 2019
(ii) Data controllers residing in foreign jurisdictions. 1 October 2018 31 December 2019
(iii) Data controllers with less than fifty (50) employees and an annual balance sheet total of less than TRY 25,000,000.00 (twenty-five million Turkish Liras) whose main field of operation is processing of sensitive data. 1 January 2019 31 March 2020
(iv) Data controllers that are governmental institutions and organizations. 1 April 2019 30 June 2020
