Ukraine takes another step in its support of electric cars

Ukraine

On 6 August 2019, the President of Ukraine signed the Law of Ukraine No. 2754-VIII dated 11 July 2019 (Law) which simplifies the rules pertaining to electric vehicles (EV) on Ukrainian roads.

The Law, which will enter into force on 1 January 2020, establishes fines (from ~EUR11 to EUR17) for owners of regular vehicles for parking on, or blocking, the parking lots dedicated for EVs, including the right to tow-away the vehicle to a police compound.

Furthermore, according to the Law, parking lots for EVs will be marked with new special signs and EVs will receive distinct licence plates. These rules are aimed at preventing regular cars from congesting or blocking EV parking lots, including charging stations.

The Law requires Ukrainian authorities to change the respective secondary legislation in order to establish requirements to EVs parking lots and signs that indicate them, as well as a form of EVs licence plates until 9 February 2020.

These changes will bring Ukraine closer to compliance with international standards in infrastructure for EVs.
