President of the EPO proposes (to the Select Committee) 2 options for renewal fees for European patents with unitary effect. The proposals are designed to be attractive to users whilst also ensuring a balanced EPO budget.

The 2 proposals involve a 3 tiered structure for renewal fees (the first tier covers years 3 to 5, the second tier years 6 to 9, and the third tier applies from year 10), with steadily increasing fee levels ranging from €465 from year 3 to about €4855-€5500 for year 20.

The second proposal suggests a reduction for certain categories of patentees, namely SMEs, natural persons, non-profit organisations, universities and public research organisations.
