Poland: UOKiK launches coal sector inquiry

Poland

UOKiK, Poland’s competition authority has instituted explanatory proceedings to examine the market structure of the coal sector.

The proceedings are not against any specific company but will analyse levels of concentration and competition across the whole sector, as well as the general market behaviour of all companies operating in it. This could, depending on its findings, lead to further proceedings against particular market participants.

According to UOKiK, its inquiry will primarily concern the distribution of coal across Poland, including sales channels and pricing policies.

UOKiK has already conducted a number of sector inquiries. Last month, it instigated proceedings to examine the structure of the mobile phone market and to assess cooperation between mobile operators.
