Today a significant milestone was reached which is expected to see the eagerly awaited 'connected cars' on Europe's roads in 2015. The ETSI and CEN (two European Standards Organisations) confirmed that research in to the basic set of standards requested by the European Commission to make connected cars a reality has been completed. This development is key to the functioning of the long awaited technology, as with over 200 million cars on European roads, the European Commission considered it to be crucial that uniform technical standards were issued to the numerous manufacturers in order to enable communication between different types of vehicles.

The journey towards making this a reality started in 2008, when an action plan for the deployment of intelligent transport was published by the European Commission. Overall, The European Union has invested more than €180 million in research projects on cooperative transport systems, which has provided valuable information to the European Standards Organisations that have developed the said standards. M2M technology is predicted to revolutionise the automobile industry, and it seems that Europe is currently a driving force behind it.
