Having a “whale” of a time

Last night there was an Olswang Construction Team evening for clients and friends at Billingsgate Market. The evening kicked off with a health and safety lecture and there was a short “dry” spell while we were taught how to wield some rather large and sharp knives to “dress” hake fillets, monkfish and scallops. In a slight variant of singing for one’s supper, attendees were then overseen griddling scallops for their starter and preparing a traditional Iberian fish stew (Calderata) for the main. Speeches were dispensed with in favour of Kate Wansbrough-Jones’ top three fish jokes (the best of which was “What do you a call a fish without ‘i’s?” Geddit?) and several “fish impressions” (including quite a convincing “shark”) by Terry Magennis. The speeches were concluded by Chris Adams’ story about the “one that almost got away”, an 8 foot plastic blue marlin replica that is currently helping to insulate his loft …

All were provided with a goodie bag consisting of prepared fish to take home and the whiff of fish on the hands as a memento of a thoroughly enjoyable evening.
