The European Commission has approved a scheme by the UK to allow state aid of up to €500,000 to be granted per company in 2009 and 2010 to businesses in difficulty as a consequence of the credit crunch. The scheme only applies to businesses that were not in difficulty on 1 July 2008. This represents an increase from the previous threshold of €200,000 per company.

The scheme was reviewed by the European Commission in the light of its Temporary Framework giving EU Member States additional possibilities for providing businesses with improved access to financing during the economic and financial crisis. The European Commission noted that the scheme is in line with the terms of the Temporary Framework and that “thanks to the excellent cooperation of the UK authorities, it was possible to approve the measure very quickly”.

Germany, France and Portugal have also used the Temporary Framework to set up their own schemes. Other Member States’ schemes are likely to follow soon.
