Ofgem consults on development in competition

United Kingdom

On 9th February, Ofgem published a consultation document that summarises developments in competition in electricity generation since the government White Paper, Conclusions of the Review of Energy Sources for Power Generation, was published in October 1998.

The White Paper specified six main areas of interest:

(i) reform of the electricity trading arrangements in England and Wales

(ii) practical opportunities for divestment by major coal fired generators

(iii) introduction of competition in electricity supply for all customers

(iv) separating supply and distribution in electricity markets

(v) resolving the technical issues about growth of gas including the proper remuneration of flexible plant; and

(vi) continuing to press for an open energy market in Europe.

Copies of the document are available on the Ofgem website at www.ofgem.gov.uk.
