New Chairman for the Central Arbitration Committee

United Kingdom

The Employment Team at CMS Cameron McKenna welcomes the appointment of High Court Judge Sir Michael Burton as the Chairman of the new Central Arbitration Committee ("CAC"). Sir Michael, as Michael Burton QC of Littleton Chambers, was regularly instructed by this firm and is admirably suitable for the position with his experience as a barrister for both unions and employers.

The CAC is to play the key role of referee in the new trade union recognition laws in the Employment Relations Act 1999. These new laws are expected to come into force shortly after Easter, according to the DTI.

The making of this key appointment suggests that the Government is now driving trade union issues ahead and the pace of implementation of the Employment Relations Act may now be hotting up.
