Minimum wage to rise

United Kingdom

The Government has recently announced that the minimum wage will be increased to £3.70 from £3.60 in October.

The Youth rate payable for workers aged 18-21 will rise in June from £3.00 to £3.20. There is to be no change to the treatment of 21 year olds who will continue to be treated as young workers rather than adults for these purposes.

The Low Pay Commission has been asked to monitor the impact of the minimum wage to assess whether there is a case for a further increase in 2001. A report is likely in July 2001.
