UK: Road transport

United Kingdom

The Clean Air Vehicles Task Force, established by the Government bringing together manufacturers, fuel producers, local authorities, central government and special interest groups, has published its first report, “Driving the Agenda”. The Task Force aims to encourage the manufacture, purchase and use of vehicles which are more fuel-efficient, quieter, cause less pollution, are less resource intensive to produce and cheaper to run in an attempt to improve air quality. The Task Force has recommended action to inform consumers, support fleet operators, promote technological solutions and has recommended improved information on fuel consumption with a clear vehicle label showing environmental information.

Published by the DETR to accompany “Driving the Agenda” is a background paper aimed at improving the public’s understanding of the environmental impacts of road transport. “Environmental Impacts of Road Vehicles in Use - Air Quality, Climate Change and Noise Pollution” is intended to be an accessible factual reference of the major environmental impacts associated with vehicle use in the UK. The paper summarises the latest understanding on air quality, climate change and noise and outlines general Government policy including the targets and objectives that have been set to address these impacts in the UK over the next decade.
