UK: Renewable energy

United Kingdom

The DTI has published an Analysis of the responses to the consultation paper, “New and Renewable Energy - Prospects for the 21st Century”. Nearly 260 responses were received and analysed during the consultation process and the report summarises the findings of that analysis, as well as listing the respondents. The main findings of the consultation have shown that renewable energy should be developed as part of a balanced energy policy giving appropriate consideration to energy efficiency, demand reduction and nuclear energy. The use of renewable energy in meeting climate change targets is recognised as important, however, responses showed that renewable energy and its useful heat and transport applications were also important. There was general support for the Government’s target of working towards providing 10% of UK electricity supplies from renewable sources, however, there was some scepticism of the Government’s ability or commitment to meet this target. It was seen as important that renewable energy should be exempt from the proposed Climate Change Levy.
