UK: Nuclear energy

United Kingdom

The Convention on Nuclear Safety, Treaty Series No. 49 (1999) has been published as Command Paper 4422, replacing the 1995 Command Paper 2927. The Convention was ratified in the UK on 17 January 1996, entering into force on 24 October 1996. This revised Command Paper includes an updated list of ratifications, accessions, effective dates and declarations for all contracting parties, most notably, United States’ ratification on 11 April 1999 and effective date of 10 July 1999. The Convention objectives are to achieve and maintain a high level of nuclear and safety world-wide and to establish and maintain effective defences in nuclear installations against potential radiological hazards in order to protect individuals, society and the environment from harmful effects of ionising radiation. The Convention also aims to prevent accidents with radiological consequences and to mitigate such consequences should they occur.
