Labour market discrimination

The new European Commissioner responsible for employment, social affairs and European Social Fund, Anna Diamantopoulou, has produced a Community initiative, Equal, which presents the proposed guidelines for the period 2000-2006 and which describes the aims, scope and procedure for implementing the initiative. Equal deals with the transnational co-operation to promote new practices to fight labour market discrimination and inequality of all types. the programme, financed by the European Social Fund, is part of the European employment strategy and gives priority to a preventive and active approach to equal opportunities. Member States will be required to ensure that they will give priority to those who are the prime victims of discrimination and inequality for reasons of gender, race, ethnic origin, disability, age, sexual orientation or lack of qualifications.
