HSE Enforcement Policy ----------------------------------------------------------------------

The HSE has recently published its policy on prevention of Y2K risks on the internet.

Inspectors are currently engaged on a national project of visiting nearly 2000 sites to inspect equipment and processes and to establish what action has been taken to tackle date-discontinuity. Where employers have identified potential risks caused by the year 2000 problem, inspectors are asking them to demonstrate that they have taken appropriate action. The HSE's leaflet Year 2000 Risk Assessment is being put forward as containing the basic requirements.

The HSE say that where either no action has been taken to identify what measures may be necessary, or where such measures have been identified but no action has been taken to implement them, inspectors will consider taking enforcement action. This could take the form of mandatory notices to carry out improvements or not use certain equipment, or criminal prosecutions in serious cases. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
