R v Contract Chemicals (Leeds) Limited (19 May 1999) Magistrates' Court

The Environment Agency charged Contract Chemicals (Leeds) Limited under Sections 6(1) and 23(1) of the Environmental Protection Act 1990, for failure to maintain plant under its integrated pollution control authorisation. The prosecution followed the release of 5.4 kg of hydrogen bromide into the atmosphere on 8 October 1998 from the company's Wortley Moor Road site. The pollution resulted in complaints of minor irritation to throats and eyes by local residents. Contract Chemicals (Leeds) Limited admitted to its failure to maintain plant and was fined £4,000 with £5,000 costs.
