Labour and pensions: Proposals adopted to protect workers not covered by Working Time Directive

United Kingdom

The European Commission has adopted a set of proposals to protect workers not currently covered by the Working Time Directive (93/104/EC). The proposal aims to protect workers from the adverse effects on health and safety caused by working long hours, having inadequate rest breaks, and disruptive work patterns. The package will cover over 5 million workers from rail, road and sea transport sectors, air and inland waterway transport, sea fishing and other work at sea and doctors in training.
