Turkey: Advantages of Solar Power Plants for Rooftops

Turkiye

The Procedures and Principles regarding Consumption Point Connected with the Same Measuring Point and Unlicensed Production Applications for Solar Energy Production Facilities and Utilization of Surplus Energy (Procedures and Principles) was drafted by the Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EMRA) and came into force on 18 January 2018 after it was published in the Official Gazette.1

The purpose of the Procedures and Principles is to encourage people to install rooftop solar power plants of up to (10) kW.

  1. Scope of the Procedures and Principles Solar energy systems for rooftops of (10) kW or less will be connected to the grid through the electricity meter (“measuring point”) associated with the residence (“consumption point”) in question. According to the Procedures and Principles, each residence may only make one (1) application.2 A residence cannot apply for “production facilities under ten (10) kW” when it is already associated with another unlicensed production facility. If the distribution company owns the distribution unit that feeds power to the grid, then the applicant who wishes to install ten (10) kW solar panels to the roof will be allocated at most half the capacity.
  2. News Outlets In recent years, Germany has set the record for renewable energy use. The country produces 85% of its electricity from renewables such as wind, solar, biomass and hydroelectric power. High turnovers have been recorded in the renewable energy sector in Germany. These achievements have encouraged the Turkish government and its legislators to tackle the problem of energy conservation. The result is the Procedures and Principles, which the press have widely reported. Citizens are pleased that they will be able to install solar power plants on their roofs and sell their surplus energy to the grid. These developments should help to raise awareness about the problem of saving energy and will make it easier for people to generate unlicensed electricity using residential solar power systems.
