Manufacturer Fined £800,000 over Injured Worker

A Durham supplier to the aerospace trade has been fined £800,000 when an employee sustained serious leg injuries at the company’s Llantrisant, Pontycun factory. The worker fell into the path of an advancing work platform.

He suffered two broken ankles as well as flesh and muscle injuries that required vein and skin grafts to both legs. The incident occurred after his right leg was trapped and he was dragged along the metal floor for the full length of the machine’s cycle. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) conducted an investigation on 5 January 2016, which found that the company had “failed to prevent access to dangerous parts of machinery, namely the milling machine where [the worker] was working”.

The manufacturer pleaded guilty to breaching Regulation 11(1) of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998, which resulted in the above mentioned fine of £800,000 as well as an order to pay costs of £5,119.

According to HSE inspector Wayne Williams, “this injury could have been easily prevented and the risk should have been identified.” He went on to state that employers should minimise the risk from dangerous machinery by properly assessing and applying effective control measures.
