Ukraine: law on Ukraine’s course towards joining NATO

Ukraine

On 8 July 2017, a law setting the course for Ukraine’s membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) entered into force (“UA-NATO Law”).

The UA-NATO Law brings changes to the current legal framework on the nature of the security system and the basic principles of Ukrainian state policy by introducing Ukraine’s clear intention to become a NATO member.

The cooperation between NATO and Ukraine covers a wide range of areas, including the defence and security sector, economic development and other reform processes designed to help Ukraine strengthen democracy, the rule of law, human rights and the market economy. The UA-NATO Law aims to deepen this cooperation and enhance Ukraine's efforts to implement wide-ranging reforms in many areas in order to achieve the required high standards of NATO Member States.

On 10 June 2017, during the official visit of the Secretary General of NATO, Ukraine and NATO began discussions on the roadmap for Ukraine joining NATO. After the meeting, the President of Ukraine publicly pledged to implement reforms to bring the country up to the standards of the Western military alliance by 2020.
