HSE updates and widens asbestos focus group

The HSE’s Asbestos Liaison Group (“ALG”) is a forum of key stakeholders, working together to promote best standards and practice in relation to control and work with asbestos. The Group reflects tripartite representation from employers, unions and the HSE.

It has recently been reported that the ALG has undergone a ‘rebranding’. As of its latest meeting on 22 February 2017, the Group now takes the form of the Asbestos Leadership Group. Though currently still appearing as the Asbestos Liaison Group on the HSE website, it is understood that the ALG has been reformed somewhat in order to open the forum to a wider audience. The Chair of the ALG has been quoted as saying that whilst the ALG had previously been focused on campaigning around the technical aspects of asbestos removal, it now wishes to engage with all aspects where workers may be exposed to asbestos. It is hoped that incorporating more representatives will result in their passing the message on through their relevant associations and trades.

An action plan is to be agreed at the next meeting in June. It is expected that the ALG will select one or two projects to progress over the coming year.
